On Monday December 9th, 2019, Vital Voices Global Partnership joined co-hosts Diane von Furstenberg and Barry Diller for the annual Voices of Solidarity event, a special evening dedicated to recognizing male allies in the fight to end gender-based violence. François-Henri Pinault received the Voices of Solidarity Award, presented by activist Gloria Steinem, for his leadership in the movement towards gender parity in the workplace and the Kering Foundation’s commitment to combating and preventing violence against women. “Gender-based violence is so universal, so extreme, and so devastating that we must call it what it really is: an emergency. There are still far too many victims, still far too much impunity and apathy. Individually, we sound the alarm, but, truly, that is not enough. Progress comes at the cost of countless voices — they are neglected, silenced, even threatened — but eventually their chorus becomes louder, so loud it cannot be ignored. We have not yet reached that critical mass of male voices who speak against violence, so it must become our urgent priority.”
Vital Voices was created in 1997, to make space for women to be heard, knowing that women are essential to progress in their communities. Convinced that our world cannot move forward without their full participation, Vital Voices is a global network investing in women leaders who improve the world. The network aims to create long-term investments to expand women’s skills, connections and visibility, in order to accelerate their efforts, working through four areas: individualized investments, signature programs, network activation and global advocacy, and finally thought leadership.
